It seems like the Washington Redskins are on track to part ways with tight end Jordan Reed if the veteran doesn’t end up returning.
Reed, whose extensive injury history doesn’t need much detailing at this point, is still in concussion protocol stemming from a hit he suffered in the preseason.
A new report has since suggested the Redskins plan on cutting Reed.
What might that look like?
Reed signed a five-year deal worth $46.75 million in 2016 and is a $10.3 million cap hit in 2020, as well as $9 million in 2021.
According to Spotrac, a release before June 1 would mean $8.5 million in savings for the Redskins. But there’s more to consider given the unique situation:
No matter how it plays out, if the Redskins end up moving on without Reed, it will bump the team’s current $54 million in cap space. The finer details haven’t been worked out in a few different ways here, which might explain why Reed wasn’t a notable cut alongside Josh Norman.
