What does Putin's latest address mean for Ireland and Europe? All you need to know from Russia

Seven months on from the initial illegal invasion of Ukraine and Vladimir Putin has decided to double down.

The Russian President issued a televised address to the nation on Wednesday, in which he introduced conscription for more people to the Russian Army, accused the West of 'nuclear blackmail' and took swipes at Washington, London and Berlin.

He also claimed that Russia had weapons that not even NATO countries had, attempting to reassure the Russian people that things were going to plan in Ukraine.

Things are certainly tenser than they were 24 hours ago, as we wait to see whether Putin and Russia follow through with their threats.

The Kremlin leader insisted that it wasn't a "bluff" but many believe that he is panicking after the failure of his illegal invasion of Ukraine.

Here's what we can expect to happen over the next stages of the conflict.

Increase in Russian manpower for illegal Ukraine invasion

Straight off the bat, the Russian army now has 300,000 more people in it.

Mr Putin claimed that these people have "specialist skills" needed in Ukraine, though his defence secretary admitted that the extra manpower was needed to defend a front line stretching for around about 1,000km.

There has been a growing anti-war sentiment in parts of Russia - meaning that if any of these 300,000 'reservists' lose their life in battle, things could start to turn for Mr Putin.

One of Putin's close advisors has already warned of the potential for a nuclear attack on the UK.

Sergei Markov told BBC Radio Four on Wednesday afternoon that Mr Putin is "ready" to use his arsenal against those in the West - including "against Great Britain,"

He added: "When Great Britain continues to be the aggressor against Russia, if the Prime Minister of Great Britain, Liz Truss, still has the plan to destroy Russia, people in London should understand this threat comes from Liz Truss, who is the aggressor.

"Now we are liberating Ukraine from your British-American occupation… You support nuclear terrorism.

"Russia does not want everybody in the world to die, but what Russia wants is to solve this war with Western countries conducted against Russia on Ukrainian territory which Western countries in fact occupy."

Mr Putin himself made the grim threat: "This is not a bluff. And those who try to blackmail us with nuclear weapons should know that the weathervane can turn and point towards them."

Mass emigration from Russia

Already, we've seen thousands of searches for 'how to escape Russia' and flights being booked out of the Eastern European country to wherever will take them.

Many will see Mr Putin's conscription of 300,000 people as the first sign that things are escalating - with the potential for a further 20 million Russians being called forward to fight in the army.

Most of them will be young and healthy men, as was the case in Ukraine after the initial illegal invasion.

So you can expect to see a similar situation of people attempting to leave Russia by any means possible - just like millions of Ukrainians did back in February.
