What do you think about YTL's arena plans in Filton?

After more than a year of speculation YTL has finally submitted a planning application to build an arena at the Brabazon hangars in Filton.

The ambitious proposals could see the iconic hangars repurposed into a new entertainment complex built around the 17,080 seat venue located in the central hangar.

If approved it would be the third largest arena in the UK after Manchester and the O2 in London.

The plans also include transforming the other two hangars into a ‘Festival Hall’ and ‘The Hub’.

Festival Hall would be a flat floor event space for conventions, exhibitions and working in tandem with the arena to attract large scale events.

Meanwhile, The Hub, would be the 365-day part of the venue and would include a visitor attraction, leisure, workspace and food and drink.

Malaysian investment firm YTL has also released a number of CGIs of the proposed arena complex which suggests that a number of different events could be held at the venue.

Some of the pictures show an impressive Wembley Way-style walkway which will guide visitors in through the main entrance.

Some concerns have been raised about disabled access to the site - however YTL has included lifts on both sides of the Brabazon steps which link to the walkway.

Building an arena for Bristol has become somewhat of a contentious issue among some Bristolians who felt let down by mayor Marvin Rees' decision last September to scrap plans for an arena in the city centre at Temple Island.

The arena plans for Temple Island was going to be funded by the taxpayer - meanwhile this project will be privately funded by YTL.

But many in the city feel that if a Bristol arena is going to be built then it should be in the city centre, and there are concerns about whether the infrastructure will be in place to transport tens of thousands of concert-goers out to Filton.

A new train station and metrobus route are already planned for the site as part of the Brabazon neighbourhood project to build 2,675 new homes on the airfield north of the railway line.

But what do you think of the plans? Tell us in the poll below or by leaving a comment.
