What do you think about the government's plans to combat the new Omicrom Covid variant? Let us know by filling in our survey

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced a 'tightening up' of face mask rules in shops and on public transport - as well as tough measures for all incoming travellers to the UK - to help combat the spread of the Omicron Covid-19 variant.

At a press conference this evening, the PM said anyone entering the UK will be required to take a PCR test by the end of the second day of their arrival - and must self-isolate until they have a negative result.

In addition, all contacts of those who test positive with a suspected case of the Omicron Covid-19 variant must self-isolate for 10 days, regardless of their vaccination status.

It comes after the first cases of the Omicron variant were identified in the UK.

The Prime Minister warned that the new variant, seen for the first time on Tuesday in southern Africa, spreads 'very rapidly', and could be more resistant to vaccinations - even spreading between two double vaccinated people.

Mr Johnson also promised to 'tighten up' the rules on face coverings in shops and on public transport.
