‘What do you mean?’: Texas Roadhouse server has to deliver some unfortunate news to customers, sends them home with bag of frozen bread rolls instead

One woman says she was met with disappointment at Texas Roadhouse after she sat down to order and was told there were no rolls.

In a viral TikTok, Sarah Sweeten (@sarah_sweeten_) says she was incredulous when she was told there were no rolls.

“What do you mean ‘we don’t have any rolls’? That’s the whole reason I come to Texas Roadhouse,” she says. However, she received a bag of frozen rolls and was going to make them on camera with the audience.

The first step is placing them on a baking sheet two inches apart. She then leaves them to rise for three hours. After they have risen and look nice and plump, she places them in the oven for five minutes. She then turns them and bakes for an additional four minutes, “which is actually a lot shorter than I thought,” she says.

The moment of truth

She puts butter on the rolls, admitting that she may have put too much, and then conducts a taste test. “Are they as good as when you go in and get them? No,” she says.

Commenters sound off

One commenter asked a very valid question. “OK so they ran out but sent you home with some so why couldn’t they just cook them for you guys while you were there?!” they wrote. Sweeten replied, saying that she and her family also raised their eyebrows at the situation.

However, it’s worth noting that if the rolls have to rise for three hours, there wouldn’t be enough time for the kitchen to bake them for Sweeten.

Another pointed out that Texas Roadhouse markets its rolls as fresh. However, some clearly come frozen if there was a bag available for Sweeten to take home. “They called them fresh baked, but they come frozen? Lol,” they said.

A third commenter explained why the rolls may not have tasted as good as the ones made in the restaurant. User Steph wrote, “I’d argue you didn’t let them rise long enough which is why they came out flat..the[y] probs have a commercial proofer which adds moisture and low heat to speed the process and 3 hours on bag is likely the proofer time.”

How can I get frozen Texas Roadhouse rolls?

Walmart sells frozen Texas Roadhouse rolls along with the whipped honey cinnamon and original butter. Speaking from personal experience, the honey cinnamon butter is fantastic but the rolls are not quite the same as the ones from the restaurant. They are much smaller as they are mini rolls. Plus, they come with a honey cinnamon glaze that doesn’t do much to add moisture to the roll. It is not as soft as the ones in the restaurant.

H-E-B also sells the mini honey cinnamon rolls.

If you’re looking to buy a bag similar to Sweeten’s directly from Texas Roadhouse, you’re mostly out of luck. According to a K-LAW 101 article, the company only sells rolls directly to customers for Thanksgiving, and you have to get on a list to get them.

The article states, “The manager said Texas Roadhouse does sell frozen rolls to people during the holidays. BUT there is a sign up sheet. And it is not online. The manager said you have to call your local Texas Roadhouse or sign up in person to secure your frozen rolls. And the secret is, you need to get on the list the week before Thanksgiving. So good luck!”

Google also notes that you may be able to score a frozen bag if a local group partners with Texas Roadhouse for the Rolls Fundraiser.

On its Fundraiser & Donation Request Guide webpage, the company writes, “This involves selling frozen Texas Roadhouse rolls and honey cinnamon butter. Supporters place orders, and you collect the funds, which are then used to purchase the rolls at a discounted rate. You keep the difference as profit.”

Are Texas Roadhouse rolls really fresh?

On its website, Texas Roadhouse states, “FRESH MEANS FRESH. Our rolls are baked fresh every five minutes and served with honey cinnamon butter.” The website also states, “IT’S ALL FROM SCRATCH.”

According to Cornell Law School’s Legal Information Institute, “The term ‘fresh,’ when used on the label or in labeling of a food in a manner that suggests or implies that the  food is unprocessed, means that the  food is in its raw state and has not been frozen or subjected to any form of thermal processing or any other form of preservation, except as provided in paragraph (c) of this section.”

It adds, “A food meeting the definition in paragraph (a) of this section that is refrigerated is not precluded from use of ‘fresh’ as provided by this section.”
