UK travel rules and red list update and what it means for travel insurance

New travel rules are set to make it easier for UK travellers visiting 32 destinations to get travel insurance.

The Government has lifted its travel advice for 32 different countries with the new rules coming into force on Thursday, October 7.

The update comes as the Government removes its traffic light system for international travel.

The simplified system will see the amber and green list scrapped with only the red list remaining.

People travelling to countries formerly on the amber list will now be able to be covered by insurance firms again.

This is because the Foreign Office has removed its ‘all but essential travel’ warning for those destinations.

What are the travel advice changes?

The biggest change to the system is the Foreign Office removing its advice that ‘all but essential travel’ should be avoided to 32 countries.

Many insurance companies use this Foreign Office guidance as a reference point for their policies and will not insure against this advice.

The changes mean travellers visiting one of these 32 destinations will now be able to get travel insurance and it’s hoped it will boost the travel economy.

The changes will enable people to travel for business, for holidays and to be reunited with family members they have previously not been able to see.

However, UK travellers are still advised against visiting any countries still on the red list.

The countries which have had the advisory warning from the Foreign Office removed are:

  • Algeria

  • America Samoa

  • Armenia

  • Bangladesh

  • Belarus

  • Benin

  • Comoros

  • Congo

  • Tokelau & Niue

  • Djibouti

  • Equatorial Guinea

  • Fiji

  • French Polynesia

  • Gambia

  • Ghana

  • Guinea

  • Kazakhstan

  • Kiribati

  • Kosovo

  • Liberia

  • Madagascar

  • Malaysia

  • Marshall Islands

  • Micronesia

  • Nauru

  • São Tomé and Príncipe

  • Senegal

  • Solomon Islands

  • Togo

  • Tonga

  • Tuvalu

  • Vanuatu

When did the travel advice changes happen?

The changes to the UK international travel advice came into play on October 7, 2021.

From this date travellers will be able to gain insurance for and visit more than 30 countries on the non-red list.

It is thought further changes could also be implemented in the coming weeks.

Anyone travelling should always check the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office for specific requirements of each country.
