What do people in Dumfries and Galloway make of Scottish Government's deposit return scheme?

Plans have been unveiled to introduce a deposit return scheme on bottles and cans in a bid to boost recycling across the country.

The Scottish Government is proposing to bring in a 20p levy by next year.

The person buying drinks from shops will receive the money back when they return the empty container.

Call for Audit Scotland to investigate Dumfries and Galloway Council's ill-fated recycling scheme

It’s a scheme that has been run in a number of other countries for decades – but will it work here?

We asked people in Kirkcudbright whether they felt it could help improve recycling rates and help the environment.

Caroline Pooley, who was in the area on holiday, wasn’t overly convinced. She said: “The trouble is now we’re in a lazy society and people can’t be bothered to take them back.

“We’re a different age group so we do everything like that but I’m not sure if the younger generation would.”

He said: “Years ago we used to take pop bottles back and we got 10p.

“Years ago they were doing it, it’s not new. We should take the leaf out of the old people’s book, they had it sussed.

“Bottles were always taken back. We used to take bottles back, then jump over the wall of the pub to get them back and take them back again two days later!

“If you take the bottle back and get 20p back that’s fair enough. You take your shopping trolley back and get your £1 back.”

Chris and Shirley Sturgeon from Suffolk were on holiday in the area with friends. The proposal won’t affect them as they live in England but they were still willing to offer some views.

Shirley said: “I think it’s a good idea, something’s got to be done.”

Chris said: “I think it might be complicated. They’ll do what we used to do, go round the back of the shop and get them out again.”
