What do people in Dalbeattie make of plans to scrap the free TV licence for over-75s?

Some over-75s are set to lose their free TV licence next year.

From June, 2020, only those in receipt of pension credit will continue to get it for nothing.

Some 9,000 homes in Dumfries and Galloway will be affected by the BBC decision.

It’s proved an emotive topic, especially after salaries of some of the corporation’s top stars recently came to light.

There have been calls for a rethink with Dumfries pensioner Hugh McCreadie launching a petition against the move.

We asked people in Dalbeattie what they think on the issue.

Alex Henderson. (Bobby Geddes)

Alex Henderson, from Dalbeattie, said: “I think it’s unfair on people over 75. They’re paying the big entertainers far too much money. It’s not just the wages they’re earning, it’s the perks they’re getting on the side. I don’t watch the sport because Gary Lineker is there, I watch it because football is on.

“If the over-75s have paid a licence all these years, why don’t they get one or two perks?”

Jean Collier. (Bobby Geddes)

Jean Collier, from Portling, said: “The fact it’s going to be means tested is going for the pensioners who really need it. If they thought the money was going to go for caring and the social services, I’d be all for it, but I’m not sure where it is bound for.

“I think there might be other ways of funding the programmes. It is going to cost as much to implement it as they are saving.”

Carol Lovely. (Bobby Geddes)

Carol Lovely, from Sunderland, said: “I think it’s disgusting. My partner is 76. He’s only had it free for a year and he’s had his letter to say he’s got to start paying it next year.

“He’s worked all his life and I think now’s the time, when he’s only got his TV and his car, he should be entitled to it.

“Get rid of BBC – that’s what we pay for and we’re not bothered about watching it.”

Don Broughton. (Bobby Geddes)

Don Broughton, from Cheshire, said: “I don’t think it’s right. They need to do something about the licence as there is so much choice on TV these days.”
