What do kids at Kirkcudbright Primary rate as their top Roald Dahl book?

Roald Dahl Day is held on September 13 every year.

It was the children’s author’s birthday and is marked by celebrations in schools and libraries across the land.

It may be nearly 30 years since he died but his books are still as popular as ever with kids as each generation learns about the adventures of Charlie, Matilda, the Twits and many more marvellous characters.

So for this year’s Roald Dahl Day, we asked P7 Kirkcudbright Primary pupils in Mrs Gordon’s class what their favourite book was.

Tal. (Drew Geddes)

Tal said: “Mine is The Witches. It’s just got a good story around it and it’s interesting. It’s unlike most of his books which are about fictional characters. Witches may be fictional – who knows?

“I watched The Witches film on Netflix at two o’clock in the morning in the summer holidays. I like the idea that there’s witches everywhere, they could be the most normal of people.”

Morgan. (Drew Geddes)

Morgan had a rather different – and less scary – choice.

He said: “James and the Giant Peach. At the start they’re in their granny’s house but things happen so quickly. I like that, they’re not just in the one place for the whole story.

“I liked Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. It’s just so random and I like random things like that. I’ve seen a few of the films, like the Witches film and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

Carly. (Drew Geddes)

Although Roald Dahl is more well known for his children’s books, he did also write non-fiction and one of those was Carly’s pick.

She said: “My favourite Roald Dahl book is Going Solo. It’s quite good, I just like it, it has a lot of information in it. It’s about him growing up.”

Konrad. (Drew Geddes)

And Konrad had a good reason for his favourite.

He said: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because I like chocolate. I’ve seen the film and I thought it was pretty funny.

"I’ve read George’s Marvellous Medicine and a couple of others as well.”
