What do Game of Thrones and World of Warcraft have in common?

Introduction

Game of Thrones and World of Warcraft are iconic franchises that have conquered millions of fans worldwide. The creators of these pieces gave us exciting stories, memorable characters, and spectacular battles. Although the first is a television series and the second is an MMORPG, they share similarities and various aspects in common. Today, we will highlight the most noticeable and hidden resemblances you never thought these fantasy worlds had.

Classic Fantasy Influence

Many people know that the fantasy genre originated from John R.R. Tolkien’s classic books The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, or There and Back Again. All modern fantasy products, whether games or books, borrow concepts and ideas created by the English novelist. Game of Thrones and World of Warcraft are no exceptions - the franchises are made in the fantasy genre. Fantasy worlds of these pieces feature magic, racial archetypes, and the ancient evil, seeking to make a triumphant return. While the TV series is more grim and brutal, the game is more about epic adventures than violence and bloodshed. And it’s no surprise - Game of Thrones is a mid-fantasy or, sometimes, even grimdark, and World of Warcraft is high-fantasy.

Politics and Intrigues

Complex fantasy pieces like World of Warcraft and Game of Thrones are filled with politics, betrayal, and struggle for power. These topics are widely used and skillfully woven into the considered products. The TV series is about houses struggling for the Iron Throne, which is depicted on many posters. Lannister, Stark, Baratheon, and other houses have their leaders, ambitions, and desires to rule the Seven Kingdoms. Members of the houses went through many trials and died for their people. The series does not feature one-sided characters, which adds intrigue and interest for the viewer. Betrayals, conspiracy, secret agreements, and other treacherous methods were used in the series to create tension and unpredictable plot twists. Politics in World of Warcraft plays a crucial role in the plot and story campaign. The main idea of the MMORPG is a never-ending confrontation between the Alliance and the Horde. Although these global factions fight for power in Azeroth, internal political conflicts affect them even more. The dethronement of Garosh Hellscream, the Horde leader, after his tyrannical reign is a bright example. The game’s plot often allows the factions to establish a temporary peace to withstand higher threats, such as the Scourge invasion.

The Undead Threat

An impending danger is a commonly used trope in fantasy, warming viewers' interest. The series’ plot revolves around struggling against the mystical White Walkers faction and their leader, the Night King. These cold-blooded beings control wights, undead-like monsters, and seek to break the Wall and eliminate all living in the Seven Kingdoms. It’s one of the exciting story arcs in Game of Thrones. The MMORPG game has a similar race of soulless creatures, the Scourge, led by the iconic World of Warcraft character, the Lich King. Let’s not mention that both leaders have King in their name, but better point at similar goals. The series’ antagonist sought to erase all living creatures, and the game’s villain wanted to turn everyone in Azeroth into the Scourge, ridding people of their human forms. Both antagonists raised the dead, utilized dark magic, and led their undead armies to conquer the world. The difference is that the TV show fans couldn’t influence the unfolding events, while players of the MMORPG participated in a mythic raid to defeat the Lich King with other people.

Factions and Ideals

In these fantasy worlds, factions, houses, clans, and other organizations are crucial narrative components. Faction members participate in conflicts, glorify their names, or become insidious villains. These organizations often specialize in certain crafts, allowing us to compare them and find similarities. House Stark is one of the essential organizations in the TV series. The faction members are loyal to their lord and faithful to their principles. Honor and duty are above all for Stark members, and personal interests are insignificant. World of Warcraft features a faction resembling the house in some ways - the Order of the Silver Hands. Knights of the order serve their leader and the common goal without any questions. Fearless protection of their lands and it’s an honor for them to die fighting. Both factions do not hesitate to engage in battle for their ideals. As for more peaceful factions, Game of Thrones features Children of the Forest. As the name suggests, these people prefer to live in harmony with nature and avoid wars. World of Warcraft has a similar fraction called Night Elves that prefers a similar lifestyle. Both groups are gifted with powerful magic and have rich history. Although they don’t wage wars, both factions have suffered from external conquerors. Other houses prefer to forget about them or consider them insignificant. While their legacy and history have influenced the world.

In conclusion

The franchises have lots of similarities! It’s not only because they have the fantasy genre in common, but because of tropes, plot-building, and world structure used in the pieces.
