What do Dalbeattie folk make of decision to suspend UK Parliament?

Boris Johnson caused something of a stushie when he secured permission from the Queen to suspend parliament until October 14.

The move provoked a furious response from opponents claiming the manoeuvre was “a constitutional outrage” designed to ensure a forced no-deal Brexit.

Others, including Dumfries and Galloway MP Alister Jack, insist the suspension is perfectly in order and will simply give the UK Government time to draw up a new legislative programme.

As the politicians continue to dispute the best way forward what do Dalbeattie folk think?

Lyn Bell. (Jim McEwan)

Lyn Bell, 39, was not impressed – and fears for the future.

“I don’t know whether the UK has done the right thing in voting to leave the EU or not.

“I voted to stay in because I thought it would be better for us and nothing has changed my mind.

“It’s worrying for the kids and it’s them that’s going to be affected in the long term.

“The politicians should sort themselves out and stop acting like children.”

Richard Hopkins. (Jim McEwan)

Richard Hopkins, 76, who moved from England to Dalbeattie, is right behind Mr Johnson.

“I agree with Boris to get out even with no deal. We can stand on our own two feet. We were a strong country once and we can do it again.

“I’m a firm believer that we have to get out and do our own thing.”

Laura Darby. (Jim McEwan)

Laura Darby, 30, also moved to Dalbeattie from south of the border – but takes the opposite view. She said: “I think Scotland and the UK should stay in the EU.

“Leaving won’t be great, especially for Scotland and working people like me.

“Me and my partner work a lot of hours to make ends meet and this will just make things worse.

“I would vote to stay in the EU and for independence again.”

Peter Kingston. (Jim McEwan)

Peter Kingston, 68, is backing Brexit. He said: “Boris is trying to railroad things through. And he will get his way because it will be a no deal.

“I voted out and it’s not going to affect me. I’m an out and out socialist but Boris is going to do the proper thing and get us out.”
