What do Bristolians REALLY think of Bristol?

To non-Bristolians, the city is often described as idyllic and bohemian, as it is famously known to be the UK’s green capital and a major cultural hub.

To locals Bristol is seen as a city of two halves, with many of its own peculiarities only people who have lived here a long time would fully understand.

Regardless, the city is viewed by many as a breath of fresh air and they wouldn’t have it any other way.

“This city is crazy about bread, I feel like. There are people obsessed with money, cars, houses, or whatever. Over here, they have to run to get their next slice of sourdough.

Or you can’t turn around without spotting a bakery.

However, that doesn’t mean I’m not obsessed with places like Bakers & Co. I had their December special with raisin, coriander and caraway sourdough.

Just wow.”

"The sexual health clinic by Castle Park is beautiful but I can’t photograph it because I don’t want to upset anyone!

"Conham River path and Frome Valley for getting great hikes in starting in or near the centre. And the cycle track!

"And big shout out, because it is often neglected, South Bristol.

"Maes Knoll has amazing views towards Chew Valley Lake. And there are great woods (Mannings Wood) up behind Hartcliffe (one of poorest wards in the city)"

Zoe, 33:

“I think Stokes Croft just has a life of its own, especially Turbo Island.

"I don’t think anyone who isn’t local would understand at all- it’s definitely an experience when the locals are out in full swing.

"Big Jeff is an icon that most people will probably have seen if they’ve ever been to a gig in Bristol, a lovely guy and a proper Bristol legend.”

Brandon, 24

“I moved to Bristol from London and it’s a lot more stylish and artistic than London itself. People here are more friendly and talkative. They’re more interactive when you’re out and about, whereas in London people just mind their own business.

"Some of the places i.e Harbourside and the Suspension Bridge are aesthetically pleasing.”

Sohail, 27

“If you live in Bristol, everyone knows that commuting is really hard here because of the river.

"But the good thing is that where I am based, everything is within walking distance so it’s not bad. Bristol is also the type of city where people have unique ways of going around the town.

"Like we’re known for hot air balloons, for crying out loud. It’s not strange to us when people are paddle boarding, unicycling or hopping on ferries.

"That’s just Bristol for you.”

“Ok so I love Trooper's Hill - amazing spot for both sunrises and sunsets! There's a lush coffee van on the cycle track (micafe2020) that does wonderful coffee, pastries, and occasionally/seasonally soups!

"KASK is so lush for wine and cheese (and I'd look at YUUP for Bristol experiences in general).

"Narroways Hill also has some lovely Bristol views and I feel like it gets no Bristol love!

"Seven lucky gods are also heavenly.”

“I’m proud of coming from a community based in Bristol that is so strong. Everyone knows everyone and I think that’s very Bristol, in my opinion.

"We are known for our tree planting sessions, homeless feeding sessions, litter picking sessions, charity walks, water well projects, building schools in 3rd world countries and much more.

"There are always initiatives happening like Edible Bristol or Bridges for Communities- people here always work together to help give back and I think that's amazing.”
