What Diego Forlan has said about Manchester United signing Facundo Pellistri

Manchester United completed a late deal to sign youngster Facundo Pellistri on transfer deadline day.

United have been keen to sign a new right winger all summer and were interested in a move for the 18-year-old from Penarol, which was eventually sealed in the final hours of the window.

Pellistri is highly rated in his native Uruguay after an exciting breakthrough season at Penarol, but he remains relatively unknown in Europe.

MEN Sport understands United tracked the teenager for well over a year and believe he can bolster the first-team squad later this season.

Former United forward Diego Forlan gave Pellistri his debut when he was manager of Penarol and he explained earlier in the year why the youngster is so exciting.

“Pellistri has huge potential," Forlan said in April. "There is still a lot to work on. He is growing and he makes the difference. We know it will be difficult to keep him for a long time. He has great pace and that is hard to handle."

Forlan is not the only former player to be impressed by the teenager, with Argentine icon Juan Roman Riquelme another fan of his talents.

“He is young, talented, he hasn’t played that much but you can see he is a real rascal with the ball at his feet,” Riquelme said last December.

“And that is important. There is not many like him around, who have the courage to be so cheeky on the pitch. That is highly valuable.”
