What Diego Costa said to the referee to that led to red card vs Barcelona

Diego Costa was sent off less than half an hour into Atletico Madrid's clash at Barcelona on Saturday evening after insulting referee Gil Manzano.

The former Chelsea forward had to be escorted off the pitch by his former Spain teammate Gerard Pique as his frustrations boiled over during the first period of the match at the Nou Camp, which was being watched by Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Costa was seen angrily shouting in Manzano's face as he confronted the official, who issued a straight red card.

And Manzano's report from the match details what he thought Costa said to him.

Barcelona 2-0 Atletico Madrid: Five talking points as Catalans leave it late

He writes:

"In the 28th minute the player Diego Da Silva Costa was sent off for the following motive: He shouted loudly at me the following words: 'I s*** on your w*** mother, I s*** on your w*** mother.’”

However, Atletico claim that Costa said ‘I s*** on my w*** mother’, rather than your.

Despite the red card, Atletico were able to cling on until just five minutes from time, when Luis Suarez fired in from distance.

Lionel Messi then almost immediately added a second goal as Barca won 2-0 to move 11 points clear in La Liga.
