What David Luiz said to the referee amid penalty debate in Arsenal vs Leeds United

David Luiz urged referee Stuart Attwell to send Liam Cooper off for Leeds United when he awarded Arsenal a penalty in the first half of Sunday's game at the Emirates.

In the 35th minute, with the score at 1-0, Bukayo Saka went down under a tackle from Cooper in the penalty area, with Attwell subsequently pointing to the spot.

Yet VAR suggested Attwell review his decision on the pitchside monitor and the referee changed his mind and overturned the penalty.

The Daily Telegraph's Sam Dean revealed that, during Attwell's deliberation at the pitchside monitor, Gunners defender Luiz urged the referee to show a red card.

"Penalty and red card, like at Wolverhampton," Luiz is said to have shouted at the referee.

Luiz's claim was in reference to his recent red card in the Gunners' defeat to Wolves, which saw him give away a penalty after bringing down Willian Jose in the penalty box when the forward was through on goal.

Yet Attwell opted to overturn his penalty decision and the game continued at 1-0.

The Gunners would eventually be awarded a spot-kick six minutes later when Whites goalkeeper Illan Meslier fouled Saka after he dithered over clearing a routine backpass.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang converted the penalty for his second goal of the game before Hector Bellerin made it 3-0 before half-time in a poor first half for Leeds.

Whilst Aubameyang completed his hat-trick shortly after half-time to make it 4-0, the Whites bounced back in the second half and almost mounted an unlikely comeback.

Goals from Pascal Striujk and Helder Costa got Leeds back in it but, after Patrick Bamford was denied a penalty of his own, Arsenal managed to see the game out for a 4-2 victory.
