What Daniel Sturridge previously told Trevoh Chalobah ahead of eye-catching Chelsea breakthrough

Trevoh Chalobah has previously revealed that Daniel Sturridge advised him that football comes first ahead of his Chelsea breakthrough.

The young defender has caught the eye throughout pre-season and was thus handed the opportunity in the first-team under Thomas Tuchel.

He was at first handed his Chelsea debut in the UEFA Super Cup win against Villarreal before following that up with his Premier League bow in the opening day win against Crystal Palace, a game in which the 22-year-old netted his first goal for the Blues.

However, that may not have been possible for the former Huddersfield Town and Ipswich loanee, who revealed to The Athletic that he was handed words of wisdom by former Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge during his formative years.

He said: "Daniel was with the senior England squad but he sat us all down and told us our main aim should be football.

"He told us how important sleep is. Instead of going out to parties and things, have the strength to say no. Football has to come first at this time. That's how he is, he wanted to help us not go down the route some other players.

"I've always kept that in my head, from Chelsea, to my loans at Ipswich and Huddersfield. There are temptations to go out, but you have to have the power to step away.

"You need to rest for training and to get ready for the game. We are all human beings, sometimes you need to relax but you have to pick the right time. I like going out for meals. I've been out clubbing a few times, the cinema, but only at the right moment."

Chalobah will certainly be aiming to continue his stark rise this season under Tuchel despite having been touted for a potential loan move away.

The German has already revealed that his opinion of the young defender has been altered during pre-season. Speaking ahead of the game against Crystal Palace, he said: "He has forced his way into my thinking.

"He played good games against Bournemouth, Arsenal and Tottenham and we wanted to have guys on the field who were capable of playing 90 minutes.

"Trevoh was the very first in training and he is physically strong. He deserved to play because of his performances so far."
