What Cristiano Ronaldo told Matthijs de Ligt after defender joined Juventus

Cristiano Ronaldo referred to himself as 'agent Ronaldo' in his first meeting with Matthijs de Ligt after the defender became a Juventus player last week.

De Ligt joined the Bianconeri from Ajax following a summer of speculation surrounding his future. Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona were all interested in the 19-year-old.

Ronaldo memorably urged De Ligt to join him at Juventus following Portugal's victory over the Netherlands in the Nations League final at the beginning of June.

And Juve's record signing made reference to that conversation with the 'agent Ronaldo' remark when the pair's paths crossed again in Turin.

De Ligt was then asked whether Ronaldo's comments after the Nations League final had any bearing on his decision to move to Italy but he said they hadn't.

"I had already made my choice in my head," De Ligt said. "But of course it was nice what Ronaldo said and it’s great to be able to train and play with him."

De Ligt made his Juventus debut over the weekend as they were beaten 3-2 by Spurs in a pre-season friendly in Shanghai.

United were keen on signing De Ligt but always deemed it unlikely they would be able to land the youngster given the club's failure to qualify for next season's Champions League.

The Reds continue to target Leicester defender Harry Maguire but reports over the weekend that an £80million deal has been agreed with the Foxes were wide of the mark.

The Premier League transfer window closes on August 8.
