What does COP26 stand for as historic climate change summit begins in Glasgow

Thousands of people from across the world are arriving in Glasgow for the one of the most important climate change summits ever.

COP26 was formally opened yesterday afternoon with world leaders arriving this morning.

A string of talks and special events will take place over the course from today until November 12 with huge names heading to Glasgow to take part in the crucial conference.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will officially open the World Leaders' Summit later today with leaders including US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance.

Ahead of the conference, many have described it as the world’s last chance at reversing a climate catastrophe.

COP26 president, Alok Sharma, told the formal opening session yesterday that it is the last, best chance to keep temperature limits to 1.5C.

The summit was initially supposed to take place last year, but it was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite the event dominating headlines, many are still unsure what COP26 actually means.

What does COP26 mean?

COP stands for the Conference of Parties, which includes countries that have been gathered together by the United Nations for almost three decades.

Since they were first established, the issue of climate change has gone from being a fringe topic to one of global importance.

This will be the 26th annual climate change summit, which is where the 26 in the name comes from.

And there is particular urgency over the Glasgow event as global warming appears to have accelerated in recent years.

COP21 saw global leaders agree goals of limiting global warming to well below two degrees and aim for 1.5 degrees - this is known as the Paris Agreement.

So far, the commitments laid out in COP21 six years ago have not come close to reaching that goal and the window is now closing.

It is expected that global leaders will double down on their efforts as we enter into an important period of the climate crisis.

A spokesperson for the conference said: “So as momentous as Paris was, countries must go much further than they did even at that historic summit in order to keep the hope of holding temperature rises to 1.5 alive.

“COP26 needs to be decisive.”
