World Earth Day – it’s a day about protecting the environment. So Australians got a bit hot under their collars when Adani Group tried to get in on the action.
Adani, remember, is trying its darnedest to build one of the world’s biggest coalmines in Queensland and transport the coal to India via the Great Barrier Reef.
“Tomorrow is #WorldEarthDay,” the company tweeted. “Time to reflect and do our bit. What are some of the things you do for the environment?”

A few people on Twitter, especially in Australia, noticed this might be seen as a little hypocritical.
Well, I can’t see any way this could possibly backfire. https://t.co/d4VPIzC8bR

Quite a few chose to point out they were doing their bit for the environment by not destroying the reef – either by digging up millions of tonnes of coal to be burned or by shipping it straight through the reef.
Well Adani, today I murdered the Great Barrier Reef, wait, no that was you. https://t.co/AfytIjnWtJ

Yes, that Adani, the one building a massive coal mine next to the Great Barrier Reef. https://t.co/hdazoYZ56i

According to researchers, the mine is also going to destroy a vast piece of central Queensland, the prime habitat for the endangered black-throated finch. Digging up the land itself got a few others upset.
What I do for the environment is to object to @AdaniOnline Destroying 26,000 hectare of beautiful Australian land. https://t.co/S1Z2YfNowf

And plenty of others just enjoyed the irony of it all.
ARE YOU ACTUALLY KIDDING ME https://t.co/S5mhspU6Ei

In their defence, the tweet was sent by the account of the Adani Group, which does a lot more than just coalmining. In fact, they also produce a lot of solar and are currently developing India’s biggest solar power utility.
