What Chelsea need to qualify for Uefa Champions League knockout stages

Chelsea are aiming to book their place in the last 16 for the fourth time in five seasons, but there’s still work to do.

After fighting back impressively from 4-1 down to snatch a point against Ajax on matchday four, they drew 2-2 away at Valencia last time out - in what could prove an incredibly costly result come full time on Tuesday night.

Despite an impressive group-stage record in recent seasons, Chelsea have not been beyond the round of 16 of the Champions League since 2014.

Tonight they face Lille at Stamford Bridge, and Frank Lampard’s side are yet to pick up a win there in the Champions League campaign.

Here are the current standings in Group H…

What Chelsea need to qualify and full Group H permutations

A victory for Chelsea at home to Lille will guarantee Lampard’s side a place in the knock-out stages, but they can also get there with a draw providing that Valencia lose to Ajax.

Ajax go into their final matches knowing that a draw, or if Chelsea fail to beat Lille, will take them through.

Valencia will reach the Last 16 by beating Ajax, though so long as they match Chelsea’s points tally at full time the Spaniard’s will progress due to their superior head-to-head record.

Lille, regardless of the result away to Chelsea, will finish bottom.
