But there's reason to be positive and no more so than the appointment of Clarke, Scotland's manager of the year for the magic he worked with Kilmarnock.
He's been bold in his squad selection for the double header against Cyprus and Belgium. Killie duo Greg Taylor and Eamonn Brophy are among the call-ups while there is a host of regulars in there including Callum McGregor, James Forrest, John McGinn and Stuart Armstrong in a strong-looking midfield.
