What Cesar Azpilicueta said about VAR and his disallowed goal for Chelsea against Liverpool

It was a pivotal moment in the game at Stamford Bridge yesterday (Sunday) as Chelsea had a goal ruled out against Liverpool.

Cesar Azpilicueta's close range strike was chalked off after being reviewed by the video assistant referee (VAR), with Chelsea's celebrations cut short after the Blues thought they had equalised after Trent Alexander-Arnold's opener for the Reds.

But Mason Mount was adjudged to have been offside in the build up to the goal, with the decision being that the goal was disallowed.

Liverpool then went up the other end and doubled their lead, with Roberto Firmino heading home from a corner to strike another blow to Chelsea.

And Azpilicueta rued the decision as he spoke to BBC programme Match of the Day 2 after the game.

“You celebrate and it is emotional, and you have to accept it and get it in the right way, even if it frustrating when you think you have scored a goal," he said.

“You think you have got it to 1-1, but then a few minutes later we are 2-0 down, but it is what it is.”

The decision enraged Chelsea fans , who spoke out on social media to express their anger at seeing their celebrations turn out to be short-lived.

However, former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said there was nothing to be argued, adding that Mount was offside, and as such, the goal was correctly ruled out.

His thoughts were echoed by former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness, who said the correct decision was made.
