What Celtic star did against Rangers that 'isn't like him'

Arne Engels' set pieces were uncharacteristically poor in Sunday's Glasgow derby, reckons Andy Halliday.

The Motherwell midfielder also thinks the Belgian 'fell out' of the match, and that Nicolas Raskin outshone him.

Engels played until just after the hour mark in the 1-1 draw, when Paulo Bernardo replaced him.

Halliday thought his performance was nothing to write home about: "First 20 minutes he was good, but then he fell out of the game," he said [Open Goal].

"An area where he is always good is his set pieces, and they were poor yesterday, which isn’t like him.

"As a midfielder, in the derby, you need to do more off the ball. He’s got good quality, a good right foot, but we’re talking about Raskin turning balls, intercepting balls – I don’t even remember Engels making a tackle."

Engels has come in for heightened criticism since his move to Celtic last summer, perhaps due to his record-breaking £11 million price tag.

The 21-year-old has still scored 10 goals and assisted over as many this season, and Stiliyan Petrov reckons he will be highly improved next term: "Sometimes people judge players way too early and too soon," he said.

"I think when Celtic brought Hatate to the club, there was a lot of questions about him. Can he do it, does he have the physicality to do it?  But it seems like those players adapt really well.

"They've got a great manager, they've got a staff that helps them develop and I'm sure that Engels will be a completely different player next season. Obviously it's a new league for him. You want to understand a little bit more about the teams, who he plays against. Also finding out a little bit about his teammates. I think that next season we'll see a different Engels."
