What CAS decision means for Premier League investigation into Man City

Manchester City feel vindicated after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) came down convincingly on their side as it overturned the two-year Champions League ban.

The club had always insisted on its innocence and UEFA were found wanting in the hearing, with all of their claims ignored and the only punishment for City in regard to their non-compliance with UEFA.

This latest decision brings to an end another lengthy investigation into C ity. At one stage last year the Blues were being looked into by UEFA, FIFA, the FA and the Premier League. Of those, only the latter is yet to reach a conclusion with a fine of £314,000 from FIFA their only other punishment.

The Premier League announced they were looking into the club in March 2019 - a day after UEFA had done the same - in relation to Financial Fair Play but also recruitment of academy players and third-party ownership.

It has been stressed that the league investigation into City was separate from any being conducted by other organisations, with independent information being compiled. However, the decision to wait until CAS reviewed the original decision banning City before reaching any conclusions now appears shrewd from the Premier League.

Where CAS declared some of UEFA's claims as "time-barred", it is not clear whether their statutory limitation also exists in the league who have refused to comment on their ongoing process and so it's impossible to be able to confirm what the Premier League will decide.

However, Monday's verdict represents a huge victory for City that would need something considerable to overturn, and the Blues are further strengthened by the only point that went against them in their UEFA case.

They may have not co-operated with UEFA but their conduct with the Premier League investigation has been recognised as exemplary.
