What Cardiff City's defeat against Fulham means as Bluebirds could effectively be relegated within hours

Cardiff City's Premier League survival hopes are hanging by a thread after a 1-0 defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

The Bluebirds lost a game they really needed to win thanks to Ryan Babel's wonder strike, and they remain three points behind Brighton with just two games to play.

That picture could get even worse this evening, with the Seagulls hosting Newcastle United at 5.30pm. You can follow that match live here now.

A defeat for Brighton would still give Cardiff some hope. However, even that scenario would mean they need at least four points from their final two matches to have a hope because of an inferior goal difference which now stands at -14. They would also need Brighton to lose their final two matches.

A draw for Brighton would mean Cardiff have to win their final two matches and hope their rivals don't get more than one more point, while a Brighton win later would effectively relegate the Bluebirds.

Cardiff face Crystal Palace at home next weekend, followed by a trip to Manchester United on the final day. Brighton travel to Arsenal before facing Man City.

Cardiff can no longer catch Southampton, whose 3-3 draw with Bournemouth leaves them seven points ahead of the Bluebirds.
