What cancelled EFL Cup clash means for Spurs as Jose Mourinho reveals Sergio Reguilon debut date

Here is your Tottenham morning digest for Wednesday, September 23.

What EFL Cup tie cancellation means for Mourinho and Spurs

Tottenham’s cancelled EFL Cup tie with Leyton Orient means Jose Mourinho will have to adjust the club’s plans this week.

The competition’s rules state Orient should forfeit the match which would allow Spurs to progress to the next round.

However, that is yet to be decided between both clubs and the governing bodies.

In the short-term, it means Mourinho’s squad will have extra time to prepare and rest before facing Shkendija in the third qualifying round of the Europa League.

Tuesday's cancelled fixture allows Spurs a rare opportunity to rest before kickstarting another hectic run of fixtures over the coming weeks.

Reguilon’s Europa League future with Spurs

Mourinho believes new signing Sergio Reguilon could make his debut by the end of this week.

The left-back joined from Real Madrid on a five-year deal with supporters eager to see him in action as soon as possible.

UEFA regulations state the Spaniard can be named as part of Mourinho’s squad for their Europa League tie in North Macedonia later this week.

Speaking after the win at Southampton, Mourinho noted fans may not have to wait much longer to see the 23-year-old in action.

He said: "You ask me about Sergio and I think Sergio will be quite quick. He is in the best period of his recovery.

"He's training today (on Sunday while Spurs played at Southampton) with one of my assistants. He cannot play on Tuesday but I would say he will be available for us maybe for the end of the week."

Mourinho urged to sign Championship striker

Former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara has urged the club to sign a striker from the Championship in this transfer window.

The search for a back-up to Harry Kane has been a hot topic throughout the transfer window with several names, including Patson Daka and Alexander Sorloth, linked with a move to north London.

However, O’Hara believes the Championship could hold the perfect signing.

He told talkSPORT: "They should sign a striker who has something to prove, someone who wants that big chance at a football club.

"[Fernando] Llorente was a brilliant player for Spurs. Everybody talks about replacing Harry Kane, we never replace Llorente. He was happy to play second fiddle to Harry Kane, but when he played he was decent.

"He held the ball up well and he scored big goals at important moments. That is the type of player that you really need at a football club.

"They need to bring someone in to help Kane out - and that player does not need to be as good as him.”
