What Canada Did on Friday at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games held in Beijing, China (distances in metres unless specified):

BIATHLON

Men’s 15-kilometre mass start _ Christian Gow, Calgary, finished 13th in 41 minutes and 2.5 seconds while incurring three penalties; Jules Burnotte of Sherbrooke, Que., was 18th (41:35.0, five); and Scott Gow, Calgary, 25th (42:17.6, seven).

BOBSLEIGH

Women’s two-seater _ Christine de Bruin of Stony Plain, Alta. (pilot), and Kristen Bujnowski, Mount Brydges, Ont., stand fourth following the opening two runs (2:03.21 _ 0.42 out of third place); Melissa Lotholz, Barrhead, Alta. (pilot) and Sara Villani, Norval, Ont., are 16th (2:04.21).

CURLING

Men _ Canada (Brad Gushue (skip), St. John’s, N.L.;  Mark Nichols, Labrador City, N.L.; Brett Gallant, Charlottetown; and Geoff Walker, Beaverlodge, Alta.) defeated the United States 8-5 to win the bronze medal. It is the second Olympic medal for Gushue and Nichols, who won gold in 2006 at Turin, Italy.

FIGURE SKATING

Pairs _ Vanessa James, Montréal, and Eric Radford, Balmertown, Ont., are 12th following  the short program (63.03); Kirsten Moore-Towers, St. Catharines, Ont., and Michael Marinaro, Sarnia, Ont., sit a spot behind in 13th (52.51).

FREESTYLE SKIING

Women’s halfpipe _ Cassie Sharpe, Comox, B.C., won the silver medal with a best-score of 90.75 in the final _ adding to her collection as she had won gold in 2018; Rachael Karker, Erin, Ont., earned the bronze (87.75); and Amy Fraser, Calgary, was eighth (75.25).

Men’s ski cross _ Brady Leman, Calgary, placed second in the Small Final to rank sixth overall in the event; Reece Howden, Cultus Lake, B.C.; Jared Schmidt, Ottawa and Kevin Drury, Toronto were all eliminated after finishing third in their respective quarter-final races.

SPEED SKATING (LONG TRACK)

Men’s 1,000 _ Laurent Dubreuil of Lévis, Que., won the silver medal (1:08.32 _ 0.40 seconds behind the winner from Netherlands); Connor Howe, Canmore, Alta., was 12th (1:08.97); and Antoine Gélinas-Beaulieu, Sherbrooke, Que., 22nd (1:10.075).
