Every week a Guardian Money reader submits a question, and it's up to you to help him or her out – a selection of the best answers will appear in next Saturday's paper.
This week's question
Our son and his girlfriend of several years are going off to different universities in September – at opposite ends of the country. We don't know if the relationship will last, but we would like to buy a leaving gift for her. Something she might not buy for herself – perhaps a little luxurious but also useful. We consider her a much-valued part of our family.
