What can the Dolphins learn from Week 1 loss to Baltimore?

No one likes being on the wrong end of a blowout. It’s hard for fans to watch, it’s tough for players to endure and coaches would rather burn the tape than study it. That being said, and as hard as it may be to believe, there are some long term positives for the Dolphins that can be taken from the 59-10 smackdown delivered by the Baltimore Ravens. . . And not just the first step to the top spot in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Effective pass blocking from Kenyan Drake

The offensive line is easily the biggest area of concern for Miami. The Dolphins can “Tank for Tua” all they want but if they can’t protect for him, it is all for nothing. A key part of quarterback protection? Running back intervention. RB Kenyan Drake did well here today.

That can then be leveraged into plays where the defense forgets Drake in the backfield and he can become a bigger passing threat.

Preston Williams building his character

Preston Williams has shown his potential for the entirety of training camp and the preseason. As it would turn out, Williams would score the Dolphins only touchdown today.  Williams also had the opportunity to go up and beat coverage for six more points, but he didn’t highpoint the football and it was knocked loose on Williams’ way to the ground.

If Williams can refine his technique to catch primarily with his hands, the next man under center that the Dolphins draft will have a rising star for a target.

This was the Ravens

In recent memory, the Miami Dolphins have struggled against the Baltimore Ravens more than any other team in the NFL. This includes the most recent outing — where the Dolphins got blanked 40-0 at M&T Bank Stadium during the 2017 season.

In light of that and the fact that it is only Week 1 of 2019,  it is fair to suspect that everything runs uphill from here for the franchise under new head coach Brian Flores.
