What can I do about a cracked iPhone screen?

Every week a Guardian Money reader submits a question, and it’s up to you to help him or her out – a selection of the best answers will appear in next Saturday’s paper.

This week’s question:

My iPhone 5 screen is badly cracked. Apple wants £105 to repair it, and Carphone Warehouse £216 to swap it. I’m nervous about using the shops that say they’ll fix it cheaply – will they just make it worse? If I do nothing will it affect the phone? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
