What Bruno Fernandes told David Luiz after free-kick block against Manchester United

David Luiz has revealed that Bruno Fernandes told him he was trying to 'surprise everyone' with his free-kick approach against Arsenal on Saturday evening.

Manchester United were held to a goalless draw at the Emirates, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side restricted to a handful of chances in the match.

One of their best opportunities came when Fernandes tried his luck from a free-kick on the edge of the box in a near-identical position to the one he scored against Liverpool in the FA Cup a week ago.

The Portuguese midfielder scored that one as he beat Alisson on the goalkeeper's side, something which influenced Arsenal in their defending of the set-piece on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta instructed Hector Bellerin to lie behind the wall in an attempt to block a possible low effort, but it was Luiz who got in the way as he leapt high to flick the attempt over for a corner.

The Brazilian defender celebrated the clearance as if he had scored a goal and speaking after the game he revealed what Fernandes told him after the effort.

"I think [he is] one of the best players in the league in free-kicks, Bruno [Fernandes] is amazing," Luiz told BT Sport. "He can decide [games] in those moments - a free-kick in that position.

"He even spoke to me after because he tried to surprise everyone but I was happy because I was ready and stopped a goal."
