What Bristol City players had to say as they returned to Failand for pre-season training

Bristol City players have returned to their Failand training base following the summer break.

The Robins squad were back on Thursday for their first training session of pre-season as Lee Johnson looks to whip his men into shape ahead of another gruelling Championship campaign.

City host Leeds on the opening weekend following friendlies against AFC Wimbledon, Forest Green Rovers and Crystal Palace and a US tour to Florida.

The players were in good spirits as they arrived back at Failand before being put through their paces.

Here's what they had to say.

Jamie Paterson

"It’s been a good summer, a good break. Enjoyed the beach, although there was a lot of running going on in between but I’m glad to be back now.

"I went to the Bahamas, Cyprus for my mate’s wedding and then I ended up in Dubai to do some fitness there. Doing runs in the morning at eight o’clock at like 45 degrees so it was tough but you obviously get fitter training in the hot weather.

"I’m looking forward to it (pre-season), it never gets easy, it gets harder every year but you’re getting fit and you’re living the dream so it’s good."

Bailey Wright

"It was a nice summer and nice to finally get the wedding sorted. It was an amazing few days with friends and family but nice to be back here and ready to put the work in.

"I'm looking forward to catching up with all the boys, caught up with a few obviously during the summer. It'll be good to see everyone, see what shape we're all in ready to go.

"Never looking forwards to the tests, no, but nice to be back here. No one looks forwards to the tests, pre-season's always difficult but when there's a round thing about it's much more fun."

Jack Hunt

"Not gonna lie, not great [to be back] [laughs]. No, you miss the boys and looking forward to a new season. We fell short last season but I'm sure this season we'll give it a right go.

"It's great to be back with the lads and looking forward to the running.

"I picked up an injury against Millwall second to last game of the season so I've been out for seven week so had a bit of catching up to do because I didn't want to be behind when I came in, so fingers crossed I'm up to speed.

"Feeling good, I've had three weeks off so nice bit of time with the family.

Adam Webster

"It feels good to be back, looking forward to seeing everyone and getting going. Obviously pre-season's probably the worst part of the year for everyone, but yeah looking forwards to it.

"Changed it up as soon as the season finished, everyone went, got a new trim [laughs]. But yeah, new trim. About time innit.

"I had a couple of trips, I was in America doing a little road trip, that was quality. Glad to be back home now and looking forward to the season."

Josh Brownhill

"I'm really excited to be back, especially to see the boys as well. It's been a long two months without seeing them.

"I had a good summer, happy to be back. Got a few holidays in, with my brothers and friends and whatnot but yeah, good to be back.

"We get given an off-season programme, you can't shy away from that. They track everything you do so yeah, been busy.

"I've not battered him yet [Adam Webster for his haircut], I think I'll save it for when I see him in here today."

Matty Taylor

"Yeah looking forward to it, it'll be a tough day and a tough few weeks no doubt.

"A few of the runs are a bit naughty but looking forward to it.

"I think we've all got individual fitness programmes nowadays. It was tough at times but obviously it's part of the job and you just gotta get yourself as fit as possible for when you come back.

"I have missed him to be fair [Paterson], he's been away, I've been away a lot so haven't really seen him much in the summer but we spoke over the phone and one WhatsApp obviously and looking forward to seeing his face.

"Weirdly I've seen them away on holidays actually, I think a few of them are following me around. Saw Walshy away, Packs, and Andy stayed in the same hotel as me one time.

"I had a nice summer but raring to go now and back to it, whole new year."

Meanwhile...

Kasey Palmer has been in the gym training with ex-Leicester, Bradford and Sunderland player Jamie Lawrence.

He's wearing Bristol City shorts...
