What Brandon Williams was told before first Manchester United Premier League start

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Brandon Williams is making it difficult for him to take him out of the Manchester United side.

Williams, 19, made his first Premier League start in the 3-1 win over Brighton at Old Trafford, having lined up in the Europa League trips to AZ Alkmaar and Partizan Belgrade, as well as the League Cup fourth round win at Chelsea.

The Crumpsall-born left-back started in the absence of Ashley Young and received a rapturous ovation upon his substitution in added time. Williams enjoyed an eventful full league debut in which he received a yellow card and was denied a first career goal by Brighton goalkeeper Mathew Ryan.

Solskjaer informed Williams he would be starting against Brighton ahead of the visit of Partizan on Thursday. "Brandon was excellent," Solskjaer said. "He's played well before, but first start at Old Trafford in a Premier League game, you don't know how he's gonna react.

"But he was looking forward to it. I told him on Thursday just look forward to this one, I thought it was more fair to him when he's playing his first game that he didn't play on Thursday, so excellent performance.

"He's done nothing wrong since he's come in and making it hard for me [to leave him out], definitely. He's really, really impressed me, I have to say. He's making it hard to leave him out.

"Quite a few of the fans that have been here, young boys maybe, have been here thinking, 'I wanna be like Williams, I wanna be like Martial, I wanna be like Rashford'.

"But these are young boys as well so it's still gonna be ups and downs and today was definitely a game you start on front foot, get your confidence and then it's 'how many are we gonna get?'"

United had 21 attempts at Brighton's goal and goalscorer Marcus Rashford was denied on three separate occasions by Ryan and somehow missed an open goal after making it 3-1.

"I think it's our best performance of the season," Solskjaer said. "You can go back to the Chelsea game but today the reaction after they scored was fantastic.

"And, sometimes this season, when you get one or go 2-0 up and go for the next one, how we didn't end up five, six, or seven, we don't know. But exhilarating and entertaining [to watch] and great to see the boys enjoy themselves."
