What Boris Johnson has said about postponing Premier League games because of the coronavirus

Premier League matches could be postponed as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

That is the view of the Government, following a COBRA meeting on Thursday afternoon.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson held a press conference following the COBRA meeting to outline the Government's stance on the situation in the United Kingdom.

And Premier League matches could be postponed.

Mr Johnson said: "'We are considering banning major public events, including sporting fixtures. We will do the right thing at the right time.

How might Coronavirus impact the football season?

"The scientific advice is this has little effect on the spread - but it does place a burden on other public services.

"We’re discussing these issues with colleagues in all parts of the UK."

But there was no suggestion that banning or postponement of sporting fixtures will happen immediately.

The Prime Minister labelled the coronavirus the "worst public health crisis for a generation" and said "many more families are going to lose loved ones before their time".

The Champions League games between Manchester City and Real Madrid and Juventus and Lyon next week have already been postponed. MLS in America have called a halt to their schedule, while Serie A and La Liga clashes have also been called off.
