What Ben Johnson did at the start of West Ham’s open training session ahead of Viborg clash

West Ham United held an open training session on Wednesday morning ahead of their Europa Conference League play-off qualifying first leg tie against Viborg.

The Hammers play host to Danish outfit Viborg at the London Stadium in the first of two legs for a place in the competition’s group stages on Thursday night and ahead of the game, Davud Moyes’ side opened the doors to the media for the first 15 minutes of the session.

Here are some the moments spotted during the open section of the training session ahead of taking on Viborg tomorrow.

Ben Johnson’s jovial attempt

Defender Ben Johnson has been forced to play at centre-back for the opening two Premier League matches of the season next to Kurt Zouma, with Nayef Aguerd and Craig Dawson both sidelined and Italian Angelo Ogbonna still making his way towards full fitness.

As the players started a pre-match lap of the training pitch before doing some short warm-up drills, Johnson jokingly attempted to clip a pass towards the small gathering of media around 25 yards away from where he was stood.

To the defender’s credit, he got close to his target, giving those in attendance a smile before running off.

Kevin Nolan’s missed nutmeg

West Ham coach and former Irons midfielder Kevin Nolan is known to be still a keen player whenever he gets the chance to join in training, helping the substitutes warm-up in a pre-match rondo ahead of Sunday’s defeat to Nottingham Forest.

When collecting a ball in training whilst the players went on a warm-up run, Nolan attempted to nutmeg fellow coach Mark Warburton with a driven pass from range, however, it fizzed away from going through the legs of the former Brentford and Queens Park Rangers manager going wide.

After Nolan’s miss, Warburton light-heartedly gestured where Nolan should have aimed his pass, with spirits high ahead of the session.

Angelo Ogbonna trains, but trio miss out

Italian centre-back Angelo Ogbonna was training with the main group during the session, but three players did however miss out.

Centre-backs Nayef Aguerd and Craig Dawson, currently out with respective ankle and quad injuries, both missed the session, as did midfielder Flynn Downes.

However, as confirmed by assistant manager Billy McKinlay in his pre-match press conference, Downes missed out training due to a toe issue as a precaution. However, he is still expected to feature tomorrow against Viborg.
