What Arsenal's fixture list could look like if the Premier League returns in July

News emerged on Saturday afternoon that the Premier League and the FA were discussing plans to finish the 2019/20 season behind closed doors in a four-to-six week period in July.

Premier League clubs have been out of action for the past two weeks as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, with the entire football season suspended until April 30 at the earliest.

However, that date is seen as optimistic, with the expectation that there will be further postponements, with issues over insurance and player safety likely to stop any matches taking place until the crisis is over.

football.london understands that in a conference call between the three governing bodies and the government on Saturday, the plan was reached to complete the season in July, with games to take place behind closed doors over a period of four to six weeks unless the situation worsens in the UK.

This will then take the teams more or less straight into the new season, but there will be some allowances made to try and help players and clubs cope with what would essentially be an extended 2020/21 season.

So how would that affect Arsenal as a whole and what would their revised fixture list look like?

The Gunners have ten Premier League fixtures to fit in between now and the end of the season, plus at least one FA Cup game, meaning they would have to play every weekend and midweek for six weeks - fitting perfectly into the four-to-six week schedule.

If the fixture list was to follow the same format as was previously planned, Arsenal would play Manchester City first when the season returns, as that was due to be their next match before the suspension.

They also have to play Brighton, Southampton, Norwich, Wolves, Leicester, Tottenham, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Watford, as well as that FA Cup quarter-final with Sheffield United, plus a potential semi-final and final at Wembley.

Here's how the fixture list could look:

Wednesday, July 1 - Man City (A)

Saturday, July 4 - Brighton (A)

Wednesday, July 8 - Sheffield United (A) FA Cup

Saturday, July 11 - Southampton (A)

Wednesday, July 15 - Norwich (H)

Saturday, July 18 - Wolves (A)

Wednesday, July 22 - FA Cup semi-final or Leicester (H)

Saturday, July 25 - Tottenham (A)

Wednesday, July 29 - Liverpool (H)

Saturday, August 1 - Aston Villa (A)

Wednesday, August 5 - Watford (H)

Saturday, August 8 - FA Cup Final

If the Gunners were to reach the semi-final of the FA Cup, the Leicester City clash would then have to be fitted in elsewhere, with one week potentially having three games in it.

The next Premier League meeting is scheduled to take place on Friday, where clubs could be told about a potential starting date.
