What Arsenal great Arsene Wenger actually said about Manchester United

Arsene Wenger is unconvinced Manchester United will develop a crop of youngsters as successfully as Sir Alex Ferguson did in the mid-90s.

Former Arsenal manager Wenger went viral on Thursday morning when a transcript emerged on Twitter with quotes attributed to him saying United was a 'dream job'. However, the transcript was completely fabricated by a social media user.

Emboldened by the potential of the Class of '92 and Phil Neville, Ferguson made no new additions to the United squad in the summer of 1995 even though regulars Mark Hughes, Paul Ince and Andrei Kanchelskis were sold. Gary Neville, David Beckham, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes were all aged 20 and had only just secured full-time first-team squad promotions.

Ryan Giggs, another member of the 1992 FA Youth Cup-winning side, had already won two Premier Leagues, the FA Cup and the League Cup. Phil Neville was 18 and also made the step up to the seniors.

Wenger has done some punditry work since he left Arsenal 16 months ago and was asked for his thoughts on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's approach at United.

"When you see Man United, there is potential there," Wenger told beinSports. "They have not found the collective way, maybe because all of these players are not mature enough to carry the team play of a team like Man United all together. And that's a question mark now.

"You feel something coming out but it's not ready, that's why I say when you watch them play they are not candidates to fight for the championship.

"Will they emulate what Giggs, Scholes, Beckham did over the years? Personally, I'm not convinced."
