‘What are you on about?’ - Leeds United supporters puzzled by Martin Keown’s Raphinha observation

Leeds United supporters are baffled by Martin Keown’s latest observation about their club. Working as a co-commentator for Brazil vs Serbia, the former Arsenal defender questioned Raphinha’s heroics at Elland Road.

Signed ahead of the Whites’ return to the Premier League in 2020, Raphinha helped the club finish ninth in his debut season. Marcelo Bielsa signed the Brazilian from Rennes and coached the player into an international superstar.

A move to a major European club appeared inevitable and Barcelona came calling last summer. Talk of a switch was rife throughout Raphinha’s second year in Yorkshire but Andrea Radrizzani commanded a hefty fee.

La Liga giants Barcelona stumped up £55milion to lure the winger from Leeds. Just four months later, the 25-year-old started for Brazil in the World Cup.

However, ex-Gunners defender Keown is not sold on Raphinha’s time with the Whites. He said this on commentary last night: "You look at Raphinha, was he really that good at Leeds? Then he puts on a Brazil shirt and he's world class."

The comments provoked a backlash for Whites supporters on social media. Fans were quick to remind the 56-year-old of how good he was in a white shirt before his big-money move.

@ConnorMOT92: Martin Keown... "Raphinha was at Leeds, did he even do that well there? As if he actually said that.

@lionarmour: "I think these retired ex-players don't even follow the modern game. They just jump in for easy money as so-called pundits. Leave punditry to genuine enthusiasts."

@UnitedRhinos72: "Clearly clueless on the modern game. If you are going to be a pundit, at least ensure that you do a bit of research beforehand and do your job! Frustrating."

@ItsDietrich: "Keown: He kept us in the Premier League, essentially single handedly. What are you talking about?"

@Mikey_LUFC: 2Yes Martin Keown, Raphina really was outstanding at Leeds."
