What are the record finish times at the Great North Run?

The 2021 Great North Run is drawing to a close with many runners now crossing the line after a gruelling 13.1 mile race.

The iconic event was marking its 40th iteration after it made a welcome return this year after being cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This year's men's winner was Olympian Marc Scott from Northallerton in Yorkshire, who achieved victory with an impressive time of 1:01:22.

But how does his time stack up in the all time record books?

Sir Mo Farah won the race six times in a row from 2014 to 2019. In that time his best time was 59:07 - but that wasn't enough to put him top of the all-time chart.

According to NewcastleGateshead.com, Kenyan Olympic runner Martin Mathathi holds the current men's record, coming in at an unbelievable 58:56 in 2011.

The women's record also belongs to a Kenyan, Mary Keitany, who ran 1:04:28 in 2019, smashing the previous record of 1:05:39 set in 2014.

The record's men's elite wheelchair record is held by British Paralympian and Gold Medallist David Weir with a time of 41:19 in 2018.

Switzerland's Manuela Schär hold's the women's elite wheelchair record with a time of 48:44.
