What are the most Instagrammed dishes in the world?

Pizza is the food which appears most often on Instagram worldwide according to new research.

Coming in a close second are hamburgers - both of which had over 35 MILLION posts on Instagram.

Rounding out the top three is sushi, which given its global surge in popularity over the last ten years and appealing aesthetic is perhaps an unsurprising entry.

The data has been collated by a team working at Gousto, a recipe box company, who have mapped the most Instagrammed dishes around the world by looking at hashtags and search traffic.

The report, perhaps contentiously, classes pizza as a 'New York' item rather than Italian, which means the highest European entry is macarons.

The French pastel-hued treats features in over five million Instagram posts, and was the only sweet food to make it into the top 10.

In a surprise appearance, the 10th most popular food is poke - a raw fish dish from Hawaii - which has gained fans across mainland US and Europe in recent years.

Scotland wins

The most popular food originating in the UK on Instagram is - perhaps to your surprise - haggis.

Yep, that's right, the Scottish delicacy has over 140,000 posts - nearly triple that of the next most popular British food stilton.

Scotland does well in the top 10 UK foods, as wild salmon comes up in fourth place and oats (yes, just oats) scoops the tenth spot.

Too gouda be true

Gousto also looked at which cheese appeared highest on Instagram, trawling through countless hashtags for halloumi and poutine.

The most Instagrammed cheese was fondue, appearing in one million hashtags.

Shortly behind was feta, a Greek speciality - which also topped the list of foods with protected status.

The highest ranked British cheese was Stilton, which appeared in 51,386 Instagram posts - while Somerset's West Country cheddar was right at the bottom with only 43 appearances.

No meat here

The research also looked at the most Instagrammed vegan food items, which had some surprising results.

Asian food dominated this ranking, with Korean speciality kimchi (a delicious spicy fermented cabbage and carrots) taking the top spot, closely followed by Japan's thick udon noodles.

There were a fair few entries on this list from Pacific countries, with Micronesia's staple root vegetable taro appearing over 700,000 times on Instagram.

Breadfruit - a popular food in Tonga, as well as in many Carribean countries - cracked the top 15 for vegan foods with nearly 50,000 appearances.

You can find the full results and more menu maps on Gousto's website.
