What are the London constituencies for the next election? Boundary changes explained

Ahead of the next UK general election, there are many questions around demographic voting trends, and which policies will influence different people's decisions. However, one less discussed issue has been the changes to the constituency boundaries.

The constituency boundaries used for the UK general election in 2020 will be replaced, in accordance with the recommendations of independent Boundary Commissions for England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

The current borders have been in place since 2010. Since the war, there have been six periodic reviews, including this one. October 2031 is when the next review is expected to take place.

England gains 10 seats overall, increasing its total number of seats from 533 to 543. Scotland drops from 59 to 57 seats. The largest loss is Wales. It now only has 32 constituencies, down from 40 previously, or one-fifth of the number of seats.

Regarding the 18 seats in Northern Ireland, nothing has changed.

When the next election is held, 91 constituencies will replace the current 84 in the South East, which is the largest increase. There has been a net gain of three seats in the South West and the East of England.

There has been a net loss of two constituencies in each of the North East, North West, and West Midlands.

There won't be any significant variations in the performance of the local and general elections between the strongest and weakest wards of each party.

What are boundary reviews?

To ensure that constituencies are all around the same size and respect local relationships across places, constituency borders are revised on a regular basis. The reviews adjust the borders of the electoral wards that make up seats to account for population growth and decline.

Since 2010, the present constituency boundaries have been in place. They were created in 2000 using electorates as a guide.

When examining the degree to which electorates within each constituency can differ, the 2023 boundary review is more stringent than previous ones.

All constituencies, with the exception of five protected island seats like Ynys Môn, must now have populations within five percent of the 73,393 "electoral quota." In the past, proximity to the quota had not been restricted to a certain range, but rather had been one of numerous variables.

What are the London constituencies for the next election?

The 2021 Output Area Centroids (for England and Wales) are the basis for the projected population of overlaps between the old and new constituencies.

It is possible to think of each new seat as a mixture of elements from previous chairs. This breakdown is displayed in these tables. Both the inferred winner of the new seat and the winner of the previous seat in the 2019 election are indicated by party colour.

Eltham is one of the former seats that was lost to a different party. Eltham and Chislehurst are the new seats that were acquired from a different party.

While the newly established seats are Streatham and Croydon North; Stratford and Bow.
