What happens once you have a winning ticket

Speaking to Metro, Andy Carter, a Senior Winner’s Advisor at Camelot said: “Check the ticket, ring the number on the back of the ticket and that would put you through to a lottery line. A member of my team will call you back.”

This first conversation with the National Lottery kicks off a specific set of steps that large lottery winners need to follow with diligence. Winning the lottery is a life-changing experience and you will be supported by the National Lottery’s dedicated team who will help you navigate the process.

Following a telephone conversation with the Winners’ Advisor Team whose job is to return lottery winners’ calls, you will be visited by them as soon as possible. The purpose of the home visit is to carry out checks to verify you as the winner.

“Within half an hour I can tell if someone has won the money,” said Andy. The in-person meeting is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions about your win.

Andy said: “Sometimes we get to people’s houses and we don’t even open the computer for an hour because we just sit there and answer people’s questions. This could sometimes last all day.”

Money will be paid as soon as the winning ticket is verified and the winner’s ID is confirmed. It can take up to two days for you to access the money due to bank processing procedures.

This means it takes approximately three days from when you win your ticket, to being able to enjoy spending your cash prize. Lottery winners will have their winnings deposited in one single transaction in one bank account.

Winners can choose a bank they prefer. However the money will go into a new account with a specialist team attached, who are experienced in dealing with large amounts of money.

Money can be moved from this new account into other personal ones after a few days, once funds have been cleared. If you really don’t want people to know about your massive prize win, you have the right to remain anonymous.

Smaller prizes can be claimed from some post offices and retailers.
