What are the best ever screenplays?

When Quentin Tarantino accepted his Oscar for best screenplay this year, he said 2013 would be the "writer's year". While directors and actors tend to get the lion's share of glory, film-makers would be lost without a good script written by a talented screenwriter.

What are the greatest screenplays of all time? In a survey of its members carried out in 2005, the Writers Guild of America came up with a list of 101 of the best – here's the top 10:

1. Casablanca
2. The Godfather
3. Chinatown
4. Citizen Kane
5. All About Eve
6. Annie Hall
7. Sunset Boulevard
8. Network
9. Some Like It Hot
10. Godfather II

You can view the whole list here – while the top 10 featured nothing produced after the 1970s, more recent screenplays in the top 101 included Pulp Fiction, written by Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary; Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, by Charlie Kaufman; and Groundhog Day, by Danny Rubin and Harold Ramis.

What's your favourite screenplay of all time? What makes it stand out? And who are the screenwriters whose name on a film's credits is a reliable sign of quality?
