Strict laws in Spain for teenagers that might surprise you

Spain has outlined a set of local laws and customs which travellers should be aware of when visiting the country.

The beloved beach holiday destination has set strict laws including ones that apply to unaccompanied teenagers. The rules cover minors, which in Spain is anyone under the age of 18.

The new rules come after the country set the pace with other laws that require you to show ID to police officers when requested, which means that you should have ID on you at all times. Other rules include not walking around in bikinis or swimwear shorts on the streets or by the seaside promenade.

What are the local laws and customs on unaccompanied teenagers in Spain?

The new law states that "any unaccompanied minors that come to the attention of the Spanish authorities are judged to be vulnerable and may be taken into a minors centre until a parent or guardian can be found".

You can find foreign travel advice here for travellers to Spain with minors, including families with those aged 17 or younger.

Unaccompanied minors can come to the attention of authorities for "whatever reason". However, they will be especially alert if the minor has been connected to criminal incidents, or has been in hospital and therefore appears vulnerable.
