What are people in Castle Douglas doing to celebrate Hallowe'en?

There will be some spooktacular sights in the Stewartry over the next week or so.

A week today is Hallowe’en and the young and not so young are busy putting the finishing touches to their costumes.

And then they’ll head out guising – or trick-or-treating – on October 31, providing plenty of scares and laughs in their local neighbourhood.

We asked people on King Street in Castle Douglas what they like about the occasion.

Alasdair Adams. (Bobby Geddes)

And, appropriately, we bumped into the Adams family from Livingston. Alasdair Adams said: “My favourite part is getting dressed up. It used to be sweets for me but when I lived in Japan I lived with a bunch of Americans and they take it a lot more seriously than we do.

“A lot of them were dressing up in quite elaborate costumes. It seems that it’s going that way over here as well.”

Katherine Adams. (Bobby Geddes)

His sister Katherine said: “I like the guising. I like going to people’s houses and seeing them all done up and having the pumpkins outside.

“It’s about the kids and all the excitement. I used to love all the Hallowe’en parties when we were younger.

“I had a Hallowe’en party a few years ago for older children but they wrecked my house so I decided never again.”

Susan Adams. (Bobby Geddes)

Mum Susan added: “I like the dressing up. I quite like the decorations going round the house. When I was wee I liked dooking for apples but maybe not so much now. My mum used to do treacle scones, where you had to try to catch them in your mouth with your hands behind your back.

“I think the preparation for Hallowe’en is probably better than Hallowe’en itself. It’s a bit like Christmas.”

Kelly Giblin with little Malcolm Adams. (Bobby Geddes)

Kelly Giblin was getting ready for son Malcolm Adams’ first Hallowe’en and also enjoys the occasion.

She said: “My favourite parts are bobbing for apples and trick or treating and making your costumes out of binbags rather than fancy costumes. Home made ones are better.”

Kaitlyn. (Bobby Geddes)

And the final word goes to young Kaitlyn, who was already planning her costume.

She said: “My favourite thing about Hallowe’en is trick-or treating. I think I want to be dressed up as a scary doll this year.”
