What Apostolos Vellios had to say after making Nottingham Forest exit

Apostolos Vellios says joining Greek side Atromitos was the best move for his career after ending his three-year stay at Nottingham Forest.

Vellios agreed a two-year deal at the Athens-based club on Monday afternoon, after negotiating a release from his City Ground contract, which still had a year to run.

Forest say an undisclosed fee was agreed with the Super League side, who will face Martin O’Neill’s Forest in a friendly next month.

It’s more than a year since the Greek international last played for Forest, having spent last season on loan at Belgium outfit Waasland-Beveren, scoring just four times in 17 outings.

"I am very happy to be here today to become a member of the Atromitos family,” he told a translated interview on the Greek club’s website.

“The faith that Mr. Spanos (owner) and Mr. Angelopoulos (technical director) showed, made me directly accept the group's proposal.

“I would also like to thank my representative, Mr Charistea, and my new coach, Mr Anastasios.

“I know very well that Atromitos was for me the best choice for my career.

“I accepted the proposal of a club that has top-level facilities at the international level, which you can hardly find in Greece.

“As far as our goals are concerned, I would like to make a good start in Europe in the first place to further strengthen the group's image abroad and then go even higher in the Greek championship.

“I hope to score a lot of goals with Atromitos jersey so I can help the team achieve all of its goals.

Following his near-£1m move from Iraklis in the summer of 2016, Vellios made 45 appearances for the Reds, scoring eight times, with his last appearance coming in the final day defeat at Bolton in May 2018.
