What Antonio Conte said about Nemanja Matic when midfielder left Chelsea to join Manchester United

Nemanja Matic is prepared to leave Manchester United in January in order to boost his chances of featuring prominently for Serbia at next summer's European Championship.

The midfielder's current deal at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season but he has started just two of United's 11 Premier League games at the beginning of the 2019-20 campaign.

Matic was an important player in his first campaign at United after joining in the summer of 2017 but his impact his diminished over the last 18 months.

Inter Milan, who recently took Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez off United's hands, have also been credited with an interest in Matic.

And it would not come as a shock were they to sign the Serb, especially when Antonio Conte's comments from two-and-a-half years ago are taken into consideration.

Speaking after Chelsea sold Matic to United, Conte appeared to suggest the player was allowed to leave Stamford Bridge against his will.

"Matic knows very well what I think about him," Conte said at the time. "The importance for me about this player, who is a really good player, a top player, very important for our team, but sometimes you must accept this crazy transfer market.

"And sometimes you must accept different decisions. But he is a great loss for us."

So, should Matic end up leaving United for Inter, don't be surprised. Conte's a big fan.
