What Antoine Griezmann's Atletico Madrid departure means for Alvaro Morata and Chelsea

Yesterday Antoine Griezmann announced that his five-year spell with Atletico Madrid is set to come to an end at the competition of the 2018/19 season.

The France World Cup winner has been one of the best strikers in La Liga but he is set to make his switch from the Spanish capital to Barcelona.

While Griezmann's move is going to be a massive blow for Atletico, it is set to have a knock-on effect for Alvaro Morata's future in Spain and with Chelsea.

The 26-year-old striker is currently with Atletico on loan for 18 months, a move he made in January, while the Spanish side have the option of signing him on a permanent basis for around £50million.

Morata has had a mixed return to Spain so far. With six La Liga goals and just one assist in 15 appearances, he has hardly screamed out that Atletico should pay big money to make the deal permanent.

'He reminds me of Alexander-Arnold' - Reece James is ready to be a Chelsea star

However, there had been some reports that Atletico were ready to let him head back to Chelsea in the summer, but with the latest Griezmann announcement that is highly unlikely.

With Chelsea still trying to overturn a transfer ban imposed by FIFA, several of the loanees might get their chance to impress the first team for the 2019/20 season.

However, Morata isn't part of those plans and moving forward the Blues are looking to move on from him, with Tammy Abraham potentially getting his chance up top.
