'What an assist!'- Arsenal fans in meltdown over Mesut Ozil's salary decision

Mesut Ozil's offer to reimburse Arsenal with the full salary of Gunnersaurus has garnered a big reaction on social media.

There was good and bad news for Gunners supporters on transfer deadline day.

The good being Thomas Partey sealed his £45m move from Atletico Madrid to add much needed quality to manager Mikel Arteta's midfield options.

The lowdown and verdict on Arsenal's transfer window

But, the confirmed exit of the club's mascot 'Gunnersaurus' marked a low point of the day.

As revealed by The Athletic, Arsenal’s COVID-19 cuts have claimed another victim in the shape of Jerry Quy who has dressed up as the dinosaur mascot since its inception in 1993.

In August, the north London outfit announced the decision to make 55 redundancies due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on the club’s finances and Quy’s Gunnersaurus role - for the time being - has been deemed no longer necessary.

However, Ozil - one of the club's highest earners - has stepped up with a kind gesture.

"I was so sad that Jerry Quy aka our famous & loyal mascot @Gunnersaurus and integral part of our club was being made redundant after 27 years," Ozil tweeted. "As such, I’m offering to reimburse @Arsenal with the full salary of our big green guy as long as I will be an Arsenal player.

"So Jerry can continue his job that he loves so much."

This classy gesture has prompted a massive response from fans on social media as many have backed Ozil's decision.

However, it should be noted that this is only a temporary measure as Arsenal have insisted the beloved mascot will return.

That could happen if and when supporters are allowed back into stadiums.
