'What about losing 1-0?' - Arsenal fans blast Unai Emery as 5-4 comments come back to haunt him

Arsenal's defeat to Sheffield United was a bitter pill to swallow.

A trip to Bramall Lane was always going to be a difficult test, but it was the lack of creativity in the final third which raised alarm bells for many supporters.

The Gunners' fans are accustomed to seeing fast, attacking play and while the pace was there against the Blades, the quality was a noticeable miss.

Unai Emery prides himself on his attacking emphasis, something which supporters are painfully aware of.

Asked at his unveiling how he wants his team to play, he said: “With personality. This personality for all the minutes of a match: protagonists.

"I like possession with the ball, I like good pressing against the other team.

“I prefer to win 5-4 than win 1-0.”

As you'd expect, such quotes can come back to bite you when things don't go to plan, and a 1-0 defeat against newly-promoted Sheffield United certainly falls into that category.

The irony of such comments wasn't lost on supporters either, with many taking to social media to mock the Spaniard.

Here are some of the comments on Reddit to a reminder of his 2018 comments.

"I’d take a 1-0 win. The satisfaction of seeing your team keep a clean sheet is unmatched."

"What's a clean sheet?"

"I'd put it this way, I prefer seeing my team win 1-0 when going through the fixture history, but for the 90 minutes of the game, 5-4 is more fun. But yeah, 1-0 looks a lot better afterwards."

"I’d much rather have a high intensity win even if it comes with the risk of a draw or loss."

"But he ended up losing 1-0."

"I mean, it isn't the only result he's ever had in his entire career, is it?"

"Try doing one of those then."

"You're not gonna score 5 goals if your most creative ball player is David Luiz."

"You’re not gonna concede 0 goals if your best centre back is David Luiz."

"How about losing 1-0, how does he feel about that?"
